In this web page I intend to show how poverty is combated and the policies that are proposed and implemented. Poverty has always been seen as a
marginal issue but it is now a central concern in Ireland. In Ireland we have a lot of poverty but it is very hard to see. When one thinks of poverty
one thinks of people lying on the streets and begging for money. But there are many more types of poverty. It takes form such as long term unemployment
even though we have very little short term unemployment in Ireland, unequal income distribution,
deprivation of various necessities such as housing
or education. Firstly I will define Poverty and show how it is measured to find the true meaning of the term. The difference between temporary and permanent poverty is also a major issue. In Ireland the biggest organisation for fighting poverty is called " Combat Poverty Agency" and its work is recognised throughout the country. To combat poverty, one idea that is put forward is that economic growth and distribution of income is a major contribution to the fight against poverty. The growth of an economy like Irelands celtic tiger would seem to prove that in a booming economy people's welfare must rise. Economic policies, strategies and economic structure also are important variables regarding poverty. The set up of an economy and the policies of the economy differ from country to country and I will show how the Irish set up works and if it is effective. |
